Subject: Champion

With the 25 year anniversary of the Ray Mancini/Duk Koo Kim fight upon us, ESPN Classic showed Champion, which is a biography of Kim made in Korea. In some subtle ways, the movie parallels the Rocky movies, but it's all in one good film versus spread out over 6 good to mediocre to bad back to good and so on films. Guy trains to be a boxer, earns his way into respect even though he feels boxing is all he has when he would rather be something else, starts winning championships and almost gets too wrapped up in his own stardom, but finally finds love and respect for his job and himself. Sadly most of us knows how that ended for Kim though. The movie is really well done and you learn that Kim's biggest opponent has always been himself, so you get the sense that by the time he fought Mancini, Kim was a man at peace with himself. Of course this could all just be "happy ending" writing to make the tragedy seem less senseless, but either way you gain a huge amount of respect for Kim and what he went through just to have the opportunity to fight for a world title and how he was not the "stepping stone" fight that many thought he was going into the fight.
