Subject: Who needs originality? It's summer!

I found this list of the summer movies over at the Onion AV Club, and decided to play a game. Sequels are marked with an S, Remakes are marked with an R, and remakes of TV shows are marked with an RTV.

Unleashed
Cinderella Man
Howl's Moving Castle
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Dark Water
Fantastic Four
Wedding Crashers
The Island
The Brothers Grimm
Sky High
Stealth (ok, not a sequel or remake, but proof that an original script ain't necessarily a good thing; Jaimie Foxx seems to be following the Cuba Gooding Jr career track of winning an Oscar, and then making nothing but sh*t for the rest of his life)
The Skeleton Key
The 40-Year-Old Virgin

(RTV) Bewitched
(RTV) The Dukes Of Hazzard
(RTV) The Honeymooners

(R)The Longest Yard
(R) War Of The Worlds
(R)Lords Of Dogtown (this once's hard to categorize; it's a fictionalized remake of a documentary, which is just about the dumbest idea I've ever heard; it's also far, far inferior to the original documentary)
(R) Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
(R) Bad News Bears
(R) The Pink Panther

(S) Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge Of The Sith
(S) Batman Begins (again, hard to categorize, since it's a sequel that utterly ignores the films that came before it; but I still say it's a sequel of sorts)
(S) Herbie: Fully Loaded
(S) Land Of The Dead

So of the 26 films released this summer, fully half of them are either remakes or sequels...which is actually a lower percentage than I expected. And of the original films, one is about a supersmart killer robot fighter jet versus Jaimie Foxx. And no, I don't mean that in a good way. And another is Fantastic Four, which just looks dreadful.

I'm going to be renting a lot of DVDs this summer.
