This is just flat out the best summer movie I've seen in a long time, and for my tastes, the best superhero film ever made. Gone are Tim Burton's campy goth pretensions and Joel Schumacher's homoerotic goofiness. Christopher Nolan has finally given us a Batman who is dark, driven, intense, and at times, downright freaking scary.

If you're expecting all out action, you might actually be a bit disappointed. The first half of the film, while not without some fights and pyrotechnics, is more about character development and establishing Bruce Wayne's motives for launching his crusade on crime. Liam Neeson gets to play the wise mentor character again, but unlike his performance in Phantom Menace, here he's actually interesting.

The performances are all stand out, with the possible exception of Katie Holmes, who is simply not that good an actress. Gary Oldman is surprisingly effective as Jim Gordon, giving a subtle, low-key performance that I wasn't even sure he was capable of. Cillian Murphy (from 28 Days Later) as Dr. Johnathan Crane pretty much steals every scene he's in.

My only real quibbles with the film are Holmes and Michael Caine, who while quite good as Alfred, has a working-class Brit accent that jars with the way I've always imagined Alfred speaking. But that's more a matter of personal taste than a real flaw with the film.

But beyond that, I just totally freaking loved this movie.
