Subject: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The new one by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, that is.

Saw it yesterday, and it's enjoyable but eminently forgettable. Depp's great as always, but his Wonka (or the way it's written) is too flaky and dysfunctional to be accepted as this all-conquering candy czar.

None of the kids really stand out (including Charlie), and the only adult really worth any screen presence is James Fox (Mr. Salt). Deep Roy, who plays the Oompa Loompa which is CGIed ad infinitum, is great, but the CGI sucks when it has to interact with the real people.

Invariably, it's actually very disjointed, as if Burton asked for big productions to be written for the demise of each kid, and then actually have to weave the story through them to make it work.

Good to kill a couple of hours, but in 10 years time I think people will still be talking about the Gene Wilder version.
