Author: The Rhino
Subject: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Based on a true story, Jennifer Carpenter plays the title character, a poor 19-year old girl who earns a full-ride scholarship to a local college. While at the college she is believed to have become possessed by a satanic spirit.

After a serious breakdown in a classroom, Emily envisions her classmates eyes begin to melt out of their heads and flees into the rainy night. This ultimately leads to her hospitalization where she is diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy that leads to psychosis. She is prescribed a drug galled Gambutrol that is supposed to stifle her hallucinations.

Wilkinson plays her priest who believes that she does not have a medical condition at all and suggests she quit the drug and have an exorcism instead. The violent exorcism ultimately leads to her death. He is then brought up on negligent death charges.

The advertising for this film makes it look like an Exorcist retread. But I figured that with Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson and Campbell Scott on board there must be more to it. The film is actually more of a courtroom drama than it is a horror film. Linney plays Wilkinson's agnostic lawyer who is only taking the case because, should she win, she would get a partnership in her law firm. Linney's character begins to believe in the possession and uses it in the case. Scott plays the Methodist state lawyer who believes that there should be a separation of church and state and that the religious aspect of the exorcism should not be a factor in the priest's trial. It's an interesting turn-the-tables scenario where the lawyers would theoretically be on the opposite sides of the bench.

While it is mostly courtroom, the exorcism and possession scenes are pretty scary. In a way, it's scarier than The Exorcist. It seems more realistic . . . well, as realistic as demonic possession can be. There are no spinning heads or pea soup vomitting in this one. In other words, no camp. Carpenter plays the character brilliantly and puts a great spin on what could be a laughable scenario. She ultimately scared the bejesus out of me!

I highly recommend this film. It's the best of both worlds in regards to courtroom drama and horror. I don't recall the two worlds meeting before but, in this one, it's a remarkably crafted piece of work.
