I found the love story to be largely uninspired and cliche, but visually the film was very impressive, and there were a great many little moments during the sinking of the ship (the mother reading to her children, the elderly couple lying in bed together, the designer of the ship straightening the clock on the mantle) that were truly moving.

I think my biggest problem with the film, ultimately, was that there were so many fascinating true stories on the Titanic that it felt a bit disrespectful that Cameron chose instead to make up a plot rather than just presenting the real people on the ship.
