Subject: I don't get Clooney's appeal
In reply to: Flair4theGold 's message, "Re: Underrated Films." on 19:45:13 11/28/05 Mon

I'll be honest... I've never understood the big deal about Clooney. It seems like he's much more famous than he should be.

He obviously made a name for himself on E.R., but I haven't been overly impressed with his movie career.

Now don't get me wrong... he's been in a handful of good movies, but to me he just seems to be playing Clooney, or perhaps I just don't think he's good enough to make me believe he's someone besides Clooney. Does that make any sense?

To me, a good actor makes you forget that he's an actor and forces you to buy into the persona they're portraying. Sean Penn is a good example of someone who makes you forget that he's Sean Penn.

With the exception of Syriana, I don't think Clooney's ever even changed his haircut for a role, or stopped talking with his head pointed down and his eyes looking up.

It's possible I'm biased because the man himself annoys me, with his personality, when I see him on talk shows. On the other hand, I'm also annoyed by Sean Penn and Tim Robbins, but I'm a big fan of their acting.

Wow, this post has ended up much longer than I was intending. To summarize, I think he's average at best, but not bad enough to hurt the films he's in.
