I'm not sure from your comment if you're aware of it or not, but Mos Def is American.

Personally (and I'm speaking as a fan of the books) I quite enjoyed the movie. The cast was really good, the effects looked great (call me old-fashioned, but I really liked the fact that the Vogons were guys in big rubber suits instead of CGI), and I thought it was a case of a screen adaptation that stayed true to the spirit of the books, while taking a few liberties with the details of the story, and I have no problem with that.

What I didn't like were the actually Guide interludes. A couple of them were pretty funny (the falling whale, for instance), but a lot of Douglas Adams' humor relies on silly sounding names (Ravenous Bugblatter Beast, Pan-Galactic Gargleblaster, etc), and I felt those jokes kind of fell flat in the film (they fell flat in the book, too).

Unsung Hero of the Film Award goes to Bill Nighy as Slartibartfast (yet another silly sounding name), the engineer building Earth-2. A subtly brilliant actor, and just throws himself completely into every role (even when he's in awful films like Underworld).
