Subject: Superman 2 and 2006's Superman Returns

This past week I watched my Superman 2 DVD with my daughter for the first time and it got me thinking about what worked and should be kept for the new Superman movie and what should be completely ignored.

KEEP:
The Christopher Reeve vibe of Superman. Reeve accurately conveyed the "boy scout" charm of Superman along with his serious "I'll beat your ass" side. Superman had a twinkle in his eye when he made a small joke, but could turn the other way in the split moment. I liked that. Reeve's Clark Kent was a little too nebbish for me, but it wasn't bad.

The music. The classic Superman theme needs to be used and from what I read, they are going to incorporate it in "some way". I don't know what that exactly means, but I'm a little scared.

Margot Kidder's Lois Lane. She was excellent as Lane, except for the raspy voice. She was also surprisingly sexy.

Jackie Cooper's Perry White: played White perfectly.

Terence Stamp's General Zod: I know Zod isn't even in "Returns", but I liked his scene-stealing, over-the-top take on Zod. Here's hoping that same kind of performance will be applied in the new film.

DON'T KEEP:

Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor. I love Hackman and I hope he makes 50 more movies before he retires, but his Lex Luthor was just too lame. Too jokey and light-hearted. This guy is supposed to be a cunning genious. Hackman turned Luthor into a dunder-headed stumblebum. I hope Spacey plays Luthor like the behind-the-scenes evil mastermind that he is supposed to be.

Marc McClure's Jimmy Olsen. Just because he's Marc McClure. I don't care that he was in Back To The Future.

Marlon Brando as Jor-El. Just bad and hammy.

There is probably more, but I'm tired now.
