Christopher Reeve should've won an Oscar for his portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman. He actually made both characters completely different, and gave you the belief (if you don't know the comic book lore) that Kent and Superman could be two different people.

It's like that scene in the original where he's about to tell Lois who he really is: the shoulders come up, the posture straightens, the voice deepens, you can feel the sudden confidence in him . . . and then he decides not to tell Lois, and he reverts to goofy, diffident Clark.

As far as those characterizations go, I don't know how much I'd blame the actors considering the director obviously has it in mind how those characters should be played. So if Kent came off as a dweeb and Luthor a goof, I'm sure that's more the fault of Richard Donner. If Hackman had played Luthor the way he played the Sheriff in Unforgiven, then you would've gotten all the underlying menace you wanted.

My problem with Hackman, as I've written before, is that stupid little chuckle he always does which reminds me: you're watching Gene Hackman. I hate it. And a lot of actors have similar anchoring idiosyncrasies.

As an aside, I thought John Shea's Lex Luthor was the best thing about Lois and Clark when that was out. I've seen old eps of the show on cable and I realize that I only watched it when it screened originally was the Superman concept, as opposed to the interpretation.

Lastly, if you go to IMDb, it credits archival footage of Marlon Brando being used.
