Subject: Shaun of the Dead!

This has been a bit of a bumper year for zombie films, some surprisingly good (Dawn of the Dead) and some unsurprisingly bad (Resident Evil: Apocalypse...and was there really anyone clamoring for a sequel?).

The most unusual of the zombie films this year has to be Shaun of the Dead, a comedy from the creators of the British sitcom Spaced, which...well, which I've never seen, but heard good things about.

And I had heard a lot of good things about SofD as well, and it turns out they were all true. This is a REALLY good movie, on many levels. In a way it builds off of ROmero's original Dawn of the Dead, in which the zombies were compared with mall shoppers, only in this case the parallel isn't just limited to mall denizens but to pretty much everyone. The hero of the film is a largely clueless loser, living pretty much like a zombie himself until the undead apocalypse, combined with his girlfriend dumping him, turns him into a heroic man of action...although he does remain pretty clueless.

Armed with a cricket bat and his best friend Ed, who's even more clueless than he is, Shaun embarks on a mission to get his mum and ex-girlfriend to safety.

While not terribly scary (though it does have its creepy moments) this is a really funny movie, and should please fans of both horror and British style comedy. And for fans of zombie movies, there are some clever references peppered about as well. Very fun stuff.
