If you liked the first US version of The Ring, you will likely detest the follow-up, The Ring Two. Naomi Watts and her creepy son are back and that waterlogged ghost girl, Samara, is hot on their trail.

It seems that the infamous video that spreads the Ring virus is still in circulation and those that don't spread the virus are still dying after seven days. But while Samara is wreaking havoc on the innocent, she's also wanting to take over the body of Watts' son so she can once again have what she's been obsessing over, a mommy. And while the idea of child possession is a chilling one, this one plays out more like a big budget Sci-Fi Channel movie. The chills aren't there.

Mostly I found this film boring. It seems to just kind of stumble around. The "scary" moments in the film aren't all that scary. What do you expect out of a scary film? You expect things to jump out and startle you with big orchestra hits to drive home the jolt. Arresting imagery, disturbing scenarios that would shake up your world should it happen in your real life, nightmares on Earth. Not so much. There are a couple of startling moments but nothing truly worth writing home about.

Apparently the audience felt the same way. I recall the first film vividly (saw it as part of a double feature with a big screen viewing of The Shining) and the audience's reaction. Jumping, screaming, nervous, building groans . . . didn't here a peep out the sequel's audience. If anything, the only creepy part of the film is the damned kid who plays Watts' son. He's creepier than the CREEPY KID in the movie! There's something unusually wrong about that. As a matter of fact, my buddy Marty commented that the kid was so creepy that he wanted to slap him and tell him to stop being so creepy. I enjoyed that comment more than the film.

There are a few arresting images in the movie, however, even if they don't really make much sense. Take, for instance, a scene involving a group (bunch, gaggle, pack, murder, school, whatever) of deer that plot to destroy Watts' car and the humans inside of it after she and her eerie son leave a flea market. Pretty scary to witness. But what does that have to do with the Samara? Are we to assume that she possessed the deer and why would she put her precious "mommy" and the vessel in which she wants to inhabit, the creepier kid, in harm's way by allowing deer to nearly take their lives? Later in the film, Watts returns to Samara's childhood home and takes a tour of the basement where she discovers a large quantity of deer antlers. I guess that's supposed to explain it . . .yet it doesn't.

And then there's the ending. While I won't spoil it for you, let's just say the ending is a little too obvious. I was left thinking, "That's all it takes to stop the supernatural phenomenon that is Samara? Seriously? Hell, they should've done that shit in the first film and saved money to make a GOOD film!"

I had high hopes for this film since I really enjoyed the first one. Those hopes were grounded and buried after seeing it. Not recommended.
