I knew when I said that about Elisabeth Shue it probably didn't mean much, although I thought she was very good.

When Hanks won for Forrest Gump, then there was al pacino for scent of a woman, geoffrey rush in shine could probably extend it to Nicholson in as good s it gets and Hanks again in Philadelphia. The Oscars definately favours a 'type' and goes for something that seems to suit its image. Not to say those people above aren't deserving wiinners overall.

On Denzel, ater reading the book of Malcolm X, his portrayal in that film was was spot on. Much better than Training Day, which he looked like he could do in his sleep. No light and dark about the character, it was pretty straight down the line I thought.
