Subject: Lots of movie news

John August, screenwriter for Charlie's Angels and Big Fish will be writing the screenplay for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton. Here's a quote from Burton about his take on the film: "Well, I don't want to crush people's childhood dreams, but the original film is sappy. It's sappy when it shouldn't be sappy and it's weird. Let's just say it's not one of my personal favorites. I'd rate 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' much higher. I responded to the children's book [Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory] because it respected that children can be adults, and I think adults forget that. There can be darkness and sort of foreboding. Very sinister things are very much a part of childhood. I like that sort of humor and emotion put together."

Batman casting: Of course you already know that Christopher Nolan directs, Christian Bale is Batman and Michael Caine is Alfred. Cilian Murphy of 28 Days Later has been signed on for a role in the film, but it's unsure which role he will play. Katie Holmes is expected to play the love interest of Batman, Rachael. It's also rumored that Viggo Mortensen is up for a villain role. However, the craziest rumor is that Clint Eastwood could play the mayor of Gotham City.

George Clooney has signed on to star in Syriana, a new thriller to be directed by Stephen Gaghan. Gaghan was the writer of Traffic. Both Clooney and Steven Soderbergh will produce. The film, like Traffic, will follow multiple storylines that will criss cross together. The film will deal with issues such as foreign policy, intelligence, oil industry, and terrorism.

Sean Penn has signed on to star in The Interpreter with Nicole Kidman. Sydney Pollack will direct. Kidman will play an interpreter for the United Nation who overhears an assassination plot. Penn will play a skeptical FBI agent who comes to her aid.

Tobey Maguire is considering starring in Electroboy, a $25 million dollar film that will be based on the memoirs of Andy Behrman. Maguire is set to produce the film. Behrman's memoirs told of a 28-year-old manic depressive con artist and art forger who had numerous sexual escapades and drug binges which resulted in electric shock therapy.

Uma Thurman has signed on for a role in Be Cool, the sequel to Get Shorty. John Travolta will reprise his role as ex-loanshark Chili Palmer. The movie will see Palmer quit the movie business to enter the music industry. Thurman will play the widow of a record label owner. The cast also includes Danny DeVito and The Rock.

The Zucker Brothers will forge ahead with a fourth Scary Movie and are interested in resurrecting the Naked Gun series. They'd better do it soon. Leslie Nielsen isn't getting any younger.

Adam Sandler is set to produce and star in Click for Sony/Columbia. The film will be written by Steve Koren and Mark O'Keefe, the writers behind the Jim Carrey hit Bruce Almighty. The film tells the story of workaholic who finds a universal remote that allows him to rewind or fast-forward to parts of his life. When his remote begins to make the decisions for him, however, complications begin to arise. Interesting.

Dimension Films and producer Mike Fleiss have acquired the rights to the Hyde comic book. The comic is described as a reimagining of the original Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story.

Bryan Singer is in talks to direct X-Men 3, however the questions remains if the original cast will be brought back. The original stars were signed for one sequel. Bringing them all back will now be very costly and difficult due to conflicting schedules. The third X-Men movie is rumored for a 2006 release.
