Subject: Best modern-day cinematic villains...

Probably where a lot of movies fall over nowadays in that the arch-villain becomes a caricature, instead of a figure of pure evil.

Obviously, the best of the modern crop - although more of an anti-hero than villain - would be Anthony Hopkins's Hannibal Lecter. Each movie definitely picks up when he's in it, and he and Foster have great chemisty - which they failed to reproduce when Julianne Moore took over the part of Clarice Starling. (I would've went for Jill Hennessy from Crossing Jordan).

Joaquin Phoenix's Caesar in Gladiator is quite possibly my favorite of today's baddies. Here's a guy who epitomizes what a villain should be about - he's not evil for the sake of being evil, but because he believe's what he's doing is in the best interests of (in this case) Rome.

The last of the triumvirate who come to mind immediately, although not a total villain, is Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko (I think it was) in Wall Street. However, while I rate Douglas as an actor, this part was so well written any competent actor could've played it.

Anyway, I'm omitting villains from superhero-serials - i.e. Superman, Batman, even Spiderman (although Dafoe is superb!) and the James Bond movies, (and the last credible villain was Christopher Walken - the rest have sucked, since). They have a leg-up on most in that's what they're born to do.
