Monica Bellucci plays the title-character, Malena, the setting a small Italian village during WWII, the story seen through the eyes of a boy, Renato, embarking on adulthood. Well, he's about 12-13 anyway, so he's going through puberty.

Every man...well, every male lusts after Malena (as this includes Renato and his dipshit friends), as she's incredibly beautiful but unattainable. She's married, her husband fighting in the war.

As is often the case, and as can be exacerbated in small, backward villages, rumors and vicious gossip abound about Malena - about who's doing her, how she's a whore, etc., etc., (although all talk obviously occurs behind her back).

When Malena's husband is reported killed, the males in the village see it as an opening to make their lust a reality, and Malena's invariably forced to extreme measures to survive.

Throughout all this, Renato continues to see Malena with the wholesome love of a boy's first crush...

Okay, this is my second attempt at a review. In the first, I wrote a summary of the movie...which gave everything away. I then went back hours later, re-edited the review, begun adding this postscript, and after I post it I'll delete the original review.

I've probably made the flick sound too sexual, when it's more a coming-of-age story. It's really Renato's movie, and his perception of events, as opposed to this story of all these dirty old men lusting after this beautiful women.

And Monica Bellucci is gorgeous. Whatever the intangible IT-factor which celebrates stars from co-stars, I think she has it...although at 33 she might've left her charge at Hollywood a bit late.

As far as Malena goes, though, you should find a copy anywhere as it was nominated for two Oscars.
