I actually think Shyamlan is a great visionary, though I agree he may be a little overrated when being judged on his work as a whole. Here's how I feel on his individual movies:

The Sixth Sense was a good movie. The characters were developed well and the story was littered with clues leading up to the brilliant ending. I do have to agree with Silk that the ending was what made people consider the movie GREAT. The point of the movie (Willis' character's inability to forgive himself) was indeed overshadowed by the ending, but still I commend Shyamalan's creativity. I can't criticize this movie too much, as I liked the imagination behind it.

Unbreakable is hands down my favorite movie by him. Willis and Jackson were great and their characters were extremely well developed. I very much liked the flashbacks into Jackson's past, as they help set up the reasoning behind his madness. I liked the love story between Willis and his estranged wife. And last, but not least, being comic book fanatic as a child, I couldn't help but mark out for the superhero formula.

Signs was kind of a mixed bag for me. There were things I really liked about it, and elements I didn't care for. There were some truly intense and brilliantly scary scenes. The home-movie of the Mexican Birthday party was fantastic. So was the scene in the cellar when everything goes dark except the flashlight on the floor, forcing the audience o use sound to imagine what's happenning. For some reason, Mel Gibson's character was somewhat unconvincing to me, and I'm not sure why. I also thought there was too much comedy for situation the family found themselves in. I also didn't care for the ending. While I liked the "everything happens for a reason" concept the ending portrayed, I didn't like the fake CGI Alien. I think once the Alien was shown, the scene became pretty cartoonish. I think the less of the Alien that was shown, the more convincing it would have been.

My hunch is that we have yet to see his best work.
