Subject: Re: M. Night Shyamalan.

He's been pretty disappointing following all the hoopla which surrounded The Sixth Sense.

I didn't think that was as good as people made it out to be. Instead of concentrating on the purpose of the movie, it exists only for the twist at the end, as I mentioned in another post.

Then there's Unbreakable. Great concept, but another one which fails to deliver. What is it? A comic-book superhero thing? Or a human-journey story? You just never know.

As a sidenote, I hate movies which end with a printed summary, as Unbreakable did. That's cheating. Okay, if you're telling us about the life of a guy - like in Nixon, or even the whimsical summations in American Graffiti. But Unbreakable? What it told us in print should've been in action in the flick.

Finally, the God-awful Signs. When I first saw this I wasn't sure about it. But the more time distances me from it, the more I hate it.

These aliens are vulnerable to water? And they come to Earth, a world which is 90% water? Which has moisture in the air? And then there's the scene they're pursuing Gibson and his family into the cellar - these aliens come millions of light years...but are now thwarted by the cellar door.

Whooooo...spooky.

Shyamalan seems too interested in his endings. There's the aforementioned The Sixth Sense, in Unbreakable they had Samuel L. Jackson realizing his earlier description of comic book heroes and villains, and in Signs, it was some cryptic message Gibson's dying wife uttered to him, (what was it? - "Swing high" or some shit like that for when Joaquin Phoenix went to town on the alien with a baseball bat. Now that's reaching!).

I love guys like the Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, Millers Crossing, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, etc.), David Lynch, and you can throw in Paul Thomas Anderson who's one on the rise, (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love). Scorese used to be good, but suffered a major setback with the overrated Casino - come on! De Niro again as De Niro and Pesci again playing Pesci! Cast somebody else! (At the time I suggested John Cusack and Ray Liotta).

M. Night Shymalan is definitely on a rapid decline, as far as I'm concerned.
