LURENE TUTTLE
( 1906 - 1989 )

Although she was most prolific on TV, she appeared in numerous films as well. She played mothers and mothers-in-law, strong willed women and other desirable types. Dainty, red-haired and petite with a distinct voice and classy style she was a competent actress.

Born August 29, 1906 in Pleasant Lake, Indiana she was raised primarily in Arizona and began early in acting as a child when her father sent her to Phoenix for acting lessons.

Lurene Tuttle got her professional acting start as a child, in a Burbank, California garage with the Horace Murphy Comedians. Tuttle came from a performing family as her farmer father, O.V. Tuttle, had appeared in minstrel shows, and her grandfather, Frank Tuttle, taught acting at a local college and ran the opera house in Angola, Indiana. She appeared on stage all over the western U.S. in stock companies. A veteran of a number of stock companies, including the Pasadena Playhouse, she became a popular radio actor beginning with her debut on "Hollywood Hotel", starring Dick Powell.

She also did extensive work on radio in the 1930s and on TV in the 1950s, 60s, 70s & 80s. She was a tutor and mentor of actress Helen Hunt who mentioned her in her 1998 Oscar acceptance speech. She was divorced from musician/character actor Melville Ruick ( "Kitty Foyle" [ 1940 ], "Kiss of Death" [ 1947 ] ), and their daughter was the late actress/singer Barbara Ruick. Miss Ruick was married to two distinguished Hollywood figures. The first of Lurene Tuttle's sons-in-law was square-jawed character tough guy actor Robert Horton ( still alive and well at 80 ).
