I must now say that am ashamed of my government. The risible
"Chretien legacy" is a legacy of decay. This is a government which
cannot run an army, which cannot operate a tax system, which cannot
administer an immigration system or control the movement of criminal
and diseased individuals across its borders. Its economic and tax
policies have despoiled the value of Canada's currency (and in the
process eroded the savings of the country's middle class). Its
management of the offshore fisheries has resulted in the systematic
degradation of these resources. It has *wasted* billions upon
billions of dollars in one boondoggle after another -- putting the
maritimes on welfare, lining the pockets of friends of the Liberal
Party with grants which have been approved before any application for
funds was even received -- and is now planning to squander 3/4 of a
billion dollars to promote the use of the French language (no doubt so
that our children can communicate with the good folk of Gabon, and, if
we hurry, a few remaining senior citizens in Hanoi).
This government has misled Parliament. Everything it touches turns to
dross. It could not produce a crop of marijuana, a task hat many BC
kids in the eighth grade have managed to excel at. Its billion (now
billion-plus) dollar gun registry, an ill- conceived bit of statist
nonsense if ever there were one, cannot perform the task that our
eighth-grader with an XT and a copy of WordPerfect 4.2 could have
organized at 1/100th the cost. Even the national highway "system" has
deteriorated to the point where the trucking industry prefers to move
goods on American roads.
Canada has a prime minister who flies himself around in extravagant
brand new government jet aircraft while members of the nation's armed
forces are expected to take to the air in 40+ year old helicopters
which require 30 hours of maintenance for every single hour in the
air, and which have proven themselves to be deathtraps. Let them eat
cake, indeed.
And as if this were not enough, Mr Chretien and his toadies have now
done almost everything possible (short, I suppose, of offering the
Ba'ath Party political asylum and government subsidized housing in
Toronto or Montreal) to destroy our relationship with our closest
neighbour, best friend and largest trading partner -- and have done so
in an utterly gratuitous and childish fashion.
The effects of the sheer idiocy of the Chretien government on the
world stage, from its embarrassingly naive Africa policy (in all
likelihood another intended make-work project for Quebec corporate
supporters of the Liberal Party) to its denigration of the American /
British / Australian / Polish effort to eradicate the Hitlerian
presence of Saddam Hussein, have diminished Canada's international
stature to the point that among the nations of the world Canada does
now truly sit at the children's table.
As if all of this were not enough, we are being forced to witness the
juvenile spectacle of a government being led by a spent old man who
clings to power, not because it is the right thing to do for the
country, but solely in order to frustrate the accession of his
nationally recognized successor. This is sandbox politics at its most destructive.
Do you remember, the last time your heart truly swelled with pride at being Canadian? It was probably in 1967.
