Greg,

Mr Orchard has been campainging on the same themes since 1988 and before. Opposition to the current trade agreements, and recurrent references to a "Canadian car" and Canadian shipping fleets and tractor factories have been a part of his speechmaking for as long. It is not reasonable to suggest that he can't provide any specifics of what he actually means by this. He doesn't need massive staff to set out what he means, he just needs to sit down and detail some of the specifics.

If he wants a "Canadian car", and this is more than just a recurrent throw away line in his speeches to pander to the crowd, how does he expect to do that? You suggest specific grants to "Canadian owned" enterprises (the Desmarais, Bombardier and Asper families will no doubt perk their ears up at this). Is this, in fact, what he is suggesting? Is he suggesting specific tax breaks? Is he proposing to take us out of the WTO as well?

Any of these may or may not (likely not) be good ideas, but it is really impossible to tell from Mr Orchard what he thinks the answer is, or if he has even bothered to think it through. No one expects detailed draft legislation from any candidate, but Prentice, Brison and Mackay have posted detailed policy statements on various issues. This appears, since he mentions it all the time, to be a central idea of Mr Orchard. Surely he could take a day or two to sit down and spell out what he actually means?

It is an utter cop out to suggest that, because he believes in the "grass-roots" he cannot propose his own policies. The art of leadership is to have ideas, and, if you beleive they are right, to be able to convince others of their rightness. Leadership is more than repeating the same speech endlessly, and trying to push the same buttons. I assume Mr Orchard seeks to lead our party because he wants to be Prime Minister some day soon. If that is his goal, people will expect him to tell them what he stands for and what he actually means by the slogans he keeps repeating.

It is perfectly easy to say "I want a Canadian car". It is another matter to actually have an idea of how to accomplish that goal. So far I have seen no evidence that there is any substance to back up Mr Orchard's sloganeering.
