Kit,
I think you missed the point of my letter and the point that Mr. Flamen made in his letters. No, we are not a socialist country and neither is the US. But when it comes to farm subsidies (a socialist concept if I ever hear of one) the US pours billions of dollars into supporting their farmersthrough farm bills. We have shown good faith to our competitors such as the US and others through out the world by getting rid of the Western Grain Transportation Act which was a subsidy competing against other countries exporting grain. The US and Europe have not gotten rid of their export and producer incentive subsidies to match what Canada has given up. In deed they have increased them.
As I mentioned in the previous post we are in a trade war with Counties like the US and like when one’s country is in a shooting war, we must all pull together. The CWB is the only hammer producers have to compete with in this “Trade War” and any producer who undermines this advantage we have, is a trader to the cause of getting the level playing field all producers worldwide deserve.
And Kit, I would like you to think about it for a minute, why would any government take away an agency like the CWB when they know it was a net cash gainer for the Western Canadian Farmer and when that same government is being pressed to continue to pay farmers ad hock payments and subsidies every year. The CWB costs the Federal government very little money. Now would you as a taxpayer rather the federal government poured billions into the Rural economy to match US and European subsidies or would you rather we kept a few aces in the whole like the CWB to pressure for a level playing field with no subsidies in other countries that competed with our farmers.
You mentioned the Prairie Pools at the end of your comments. You seem to be a little confused in that statement. You know that the Pools are not the same as the Canadian Wheat Board don't you? I am wonder that maybe since you are from Ontario you do not really have a grasp of the issues. Maybe you should leave the debate to those that walk in our shoes in the west.
