Dennis,

In terms of adding value to the economy, building new plants and equipment would definitely create more jobs and add more wealth to the economy. But your point on startup costs is a valid one so lets say the first plant would be one abandoned by the big 3 when the realized they could get labour for $10/day in Mexico.

I refer you to the link below if you feel there are no idle plants around or skilled labour ready and willing to work in them:

It does seem that any time we try to work to make this country stronger we bump up against NAFTA. However, as long as the incentives we give to the Canadian Car Company (CCC) don’t surpass the hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars we give to the US manufacturers to set up shop here we could hardly accused of not treating everyone the same.

I, as a proud and patriotic Canadian, would jump at the chance to own a truly Canadian made car. I also think that starting with a clean slate and building an environmentally friendly, low emission, fuel efficient car like the Honda I now drive we would be responding to a demand in the market given the rising costs of fossil fuels and increased concern for the environment among Canadians. Witness the resurgent popularity of the Mini Cooper.

Sure, we would have to spend some money on a patriotic campaign similar to the “Made in the USA” ones we saw in the eighties, but that would be money well spend and an investment that would pay dividends to all Canadian businesses.

And there are a lot of Tier 1 Canadian companies (i.e. Magna and others) with a vested interest in the auto industry that would see how making an investment in CCC would be in the best interest of the future of their companies. Global markets are fickle and non-domestic companies will drop them like a hot potato if another country started making similar products cheaper than them. A Canadian manufacturer, especially one they had an equity stake in, would be much more loyal.
