Jake and to all,
Simply bringing to light these facts is not cause for celebration. Indeed, these facts have been available and widely known since the time the transfers of weapons and supplies started over twenty years ago.
As is my understanding of "Trading with the Enemy" legislation, I believe that that legislation is not retroactive, though I could be wrong. Selling these materials to Iraq in the '80's was encouraged by the then-current Administration, like it or not. Let me put it this way, would you feel it just for you to be arrested and locked up for your actions 20 years ago when there was no law against them, arrested and locked up now because your actions are now considered a crime? Crap happens. All nations make mistakes and misjudgements over the course of history, the US is not immune from this in the slightest. But be careful what you advocate.
The US, other western nations, and numerous western corporations made mistakes in the past. Now, they are attempting to rectify the situation, with the consequence that the Iraqi people will be freed. The US and its supporters are now in the right, Saddam Hussein always was, ans still is, in the wrong. Let us focus on who is in the wrong right now, for fizing that wrong will make some past wrongs right again.
By the way, I don't think trying to shut down private trade with Iraq will do much... that has been the failed goal of the UN sanctions for 12 years now! It hasn't seemed to stop Russia, it likely would not stop North Korea or China or Pakistan from doing it either, arguably it hasn't. I don't see Mr. Hussein getting any nicer, do you?
