if you want to get a feel for the novels then i would go
with Shadows of the Empire. it's set roughly inbetween the
Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. for after the
movies, i would say, The Truce at Bakura. it's set
immediately after the Return movie. another series that is
good to start with is the Hier to the Empire trilogy. after

you get aquainted some with the characters, you can read
the Jedi Academy trilogy. trust me. you won't regret it
