Subject: Canarsie Movies

I remember spending many Saturdays in the Canarsie movie theater during the mid-50's to the early 60's, watching 2 movies and 15 cartoons. The cost was 25 cents and we spent many hours having a great time. When we got a little too noisy, the "mean" matron with the flashlight would come over and threaten to throw us out if we didn't behave. In those days you listened to adults, so we behaved. I remember the colored tickets that were handed out either at the theater or at P.S. 115 for an upcoming Saturday special drawing. If you had the right color ticket, your number was entered into a drum and you could win a prize. I recall one drawing was for a bicycle.

HI, MY NAME IS, VINNY COGNATO., vinny.com@prodigy.net

YES, I REMEMBER, EVERY SATURDAY WE USED TO GO TO THE CANARSIE MOVIE. THE MATRON YOU MENTION WAS A THIN LADY, THAT ALWAYS YELLED AT US KIDS. SHE USED TO SHINE THE FLASHLIGHT IN OUR FACE WHEN WE MADE TOO MUCH NOISE. WE THEN KEPT QUIET FOR A WHILE, AND STARTED TO ACT UP AGAIN. HOWEVER, WE WERE NEVER VERY BAD....WE WERE JUST KIDS. SHE ALWAYS SAID SHE WOULD THROW US OUT, BUT SHE NEVER DID.
ONCE IN A WHILE THEY USED TO THOW OUT REALLY BAD KIDS THAT DESERVED TO BE THROWN OUT. DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN SOME OF THE KIDS USED TO EXIT THROUGH THE EMERGENCY DOORS. IT CREATED A LOUD NOISE, AND LET IN THE OUTDOOR LIGHT.
I ALSO MET MANY GIRLS EVERY SATURDAY IN THE CANARSIE MOVIE. WE USED TO "MAKE-OUT" IN THE BACK ROW.

You just brought a hundred memories. I remember getting 30 cents from my mother almost every Saturday to go to the movies. I'd buy candy in the little store right next to the theater because it was cheaper.
If money was short one Saturday me and my two cousins would load up the wagon with deposit bottles (milk, soda or beer) and pull it uop and down Ave.L to get the 2 cents each bottle was worth. I could spend the next few hours talking about my years in Canarsie. I hope you write again about your memories. Carol
