Red Back opens Chirano mine

Red Back Mining NL (RBK) today announced that is has appointed Mr Bill Plyley to the position of general manager at its Chirano Gold project in Ghana. They have also appointed UK consultants to manage a tender for the appointment of an engineering contractor and awarded contracts to relocate the SAG and ball mills from the Northern Territory to Ghana.

The company said that Mr Plyley was recently the general manager of Newmont Mining’s (NEM) Australian Continuous Improvement program and comes with vast experience in the industry.

“Mr Plyley is a metallurgist who has held senior management positions at the Kidston and Porgera gold mines and was General Manager at the Granny Smith and Bronzewing gold mines in Western Australia,” it said.

The UK based GMB MEC Limited has been awarded the EPCM contract for the development of the Chirano mine. This will include the 2 million tonne per annum carbon leach treatment plant at the site.

The group also released details of its expected resource output in its new mine.

“Inferred resources indicated that 30.4 million tones had a grading of 2.1 grams per tonne for 2.05 million ounces,” Red Back said.

“A bankable feasibility study had been completed at US$325 per ounce and the open pit mine is expected to produce 930,000 ounces over the mines life of 6.5 years.”

Red Back said that planning of an additional conversion drilling program which was in progress.

“Open pit optimisation studies reveal the potential to convert additional resource ounces into reserves at current higher gold prices,” it said.

Analysts said that the initial indication output for the mine appears to be “robust” for the life of the mine.
