It's a big ticket item for ERG

Tuesday 14 August 2001

TRUMP CARD: ERG and Motorola the preferred tenderers.

Shares in smartcard company ERG soared 29 per cent yesterday on news that a joint venture company comprising ERG and communications giant Motorola had won a New South Wales Government ticketing contract.

The shares shot up 24 cents to $1.06, and at one stage hit a high of $1.08.

ERG directors said the joint venture, Integrated Transit Solutions, had been named preferred tenderer for the NSW Department of Transport's Sydney integrated ticketing system project (ITS), reportedly worth more than $100 million.

The contract will allow passengers to use one smartcard to travel on all public transport including railways, buses (both government owned and private) and ferries in NSW.

ERG, which has been chasing the contract for more than a year, said the NSW government and Integrated would now negotiate the final contract terms, with a completion date scheduled by December 31.

Under the draft contract, Integrated will supply equipment and software for the Sydney system.

As well, the NSW Department of Transport is to outsource the operation of the Sydney system to Integrated for 10 years. Integrated will use ERG's advanced multi-application smartcard solution as the core operating system.

ERG chief executive and Integrated chairman Peter Fogarty, said the selection of Integrated was a major milestone for the company. "We look forward to finalising agreements and being in a position to deliver the world's most advanced multiplication smartcard to NSW," he said.

The contract involves issuing multi-application smartcards, allowing commuters to buy season "tickets" on the card and access options like stored value ticketing.

A NSW Department of Transport spokesman said one-card integrated ticketing would make it easier, safer and quicker for consumers to access all forms of public transport.
