Transit project blow out

THE State Government's bus transitways project has blown out by a further $159 million, with spending on the Liverpool-to-Parramatta route exceeding its expected total months ahead of its completion date.

That transitway, originally due to cost $198 million, was the first in a planned network of bus-only roads designed to revolutionise public transport in Western Sydney.

Its cost had already risen by $60 million, to $258 million, in February, when services started ahead of the planned completion date in December.

Budget papers reveal it will now cost $315 million.

A spokeswoman for the Roads Minister, Carl Scully, said the new figures took into account inflation of about 3 per cent a year. She said the Liverpool-to-Parramatta transitway had also become more expensive because of design changes, additional drainage structures, more properties having to be acquired and the building of a new service road.
