Cubic Helps Sydney, Australia Move Closer To Ticketing System of The Future
------------------------------------------------------------
San Diego, June 8, 2000 – Commuters in Sydney, Australia are a step closer to using smart cards to pay for their rail tickets at vending machines following the award of a $3.1 million contract to Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) - Australia by CityRail of Sydney. CTS is a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corporation (AMEX: CUB).
------------------------------------------------------------
Under the contract, Cubic will convert 20 ticket vending machines at certain Sydney locations to “touchscreen” operation, upgrade the software on existing ticket vending machines to accept more advanced applications, and supply an additional 56 electronic gates to the Sydney rail network.
------------------------------------------------------------
Cubic, which is already supplying a number of touchscreen machines to the new Airport Link rail service to Sydney Airport, will upgrade 20 of the 320 large size ticket vending machines in the Sydney network with the touchscreen model. The new machines are easier to use, allow riders to purchase multiple tickets, and provide ticket selection in 13 languages.
------------------------------------------------------------
Cubic Australia managing director Tom Walker believes the wider upgrade of ticket vending machines with new processors and software will have other far-reaching implications.
------------------------------------------------------------
“Through this upgrade, we will have an open technology platform which can convert to touchscreen technology if desired and enable the eventual use of payment methods such as smart cards and 'electronic funds transfer point of sale,'” Walker said. “This could have major benefits for Sydney’s rail commuters.”
------------------------------------------------------------
Separately, CityRail and Cubic have signed a multi-year and multi-million dollar maintenance contract covering total hardware and software maintenance on the Sydney ticketing system. The awarding of the two new contracts builds upon Cubic’s nine-year relationship with CityRail as a systems and services supplier.
------------------------------------------------------------
The CityRail ticketing system is used by hundreds of thousands of commuters each day across the greater Sydney metropolitan area.
------------------------------------------------------------
Cubic is the largest supplier of mass transit ticketing solutions in the world with systems in such markets as New York, London, Washington and Shanghai.
------------------------------------------------------------
Cubic is also a key member of the SMARTPOS consortium, which is bidding to supply an integrated, smart card-based mass transit ticketing system for Sydney, covering rail, bus and ferries. The members of SMARTPOS include fellow industry leaders, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, EDS Australia and Philips Australia.
------------------------------------------------------------
Under the software upgrade, vending machines will have installed a processor based on the Windows NT operating system, maximizing the ability to introduce new tickets and payment methods at a later date.
------------------------------------------------------------
“We are already moving ahead with using touch screens and smart cards at some of our major projects throughout the world,” Walker said. “We are looking forward to working with our partners in SMARTPOS to explore ticketing opportunities throughout NSW and Australia.”
------------------------------------------------------------
Cubic is the world’s largest supplier of automated ticketing systems and services. A world leader in innovation, Cubic was first to introduce transit contactless smart cards in the late 1980s. Cubic’s Australian subsidiary has been operating in New South Wales for 10 years, where its CityRail system supports close to a million journeys daily.
------------------------------------------------------------
SMARTPOS represents a consortium of companies with a rich history of providing world-class transport technology and financial transaction processing solutions. The consortium consists of Cubic Transportation Systems (Australia) Pty Ltd, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, EDS (Australia) Pty Ltd and Philips Electronics Australia Limited.
------------------------------------------------------------
Founded in 1951, Cubic Corporation is the parent company of two major segments: Transportation Systems and Defense.
------------------------------------------------------------
The Transportation Systems Group designs and manufactures automatic revenue collection systems for public transit projects throughout the world. The Defense Group provides instrumented training systems for military forces, as well as avionics, data links, aerospace systems and product logistical support.

Sydney Vending Machines Speak 14 Languages
-----------------------------------------------------------
When the world came to Sydney, Australia, for the 2000 Summer Olympics, Cubic Transportation Systems was there to help with futuristic "touch-screen" ticketing machines to provide simpler and faster rail transportation.
-----------------------------------------------------------
CityRail of Australia formalized an agreement with the company for a system-wide rollout of smart card application technology in the new touch-screen ticket vending machines, following an extensive trial in Sydney. Cubic previously provided system-wide, contactless card-based fare collection systems in Washington and Chicago.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Because of the Olympics, the new touch-screen machines installed by Cubic Australia offer easy instructions in 14 languages, including English, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic, Malay, and traditional and simplified Chinese. In some cases, only two light touches on the user-friendly screen are required to get the right ticket.
------------------------------------------------------------
"With Sydney and its rail system coming under international attention, we worked with CityRail to deliver our touch screens ahead of time to improve the transport experience for the millions of Australians and international visitors expected to use the railways over the Olympic period," said Cubic Australia Managing Director Tom Walker.
------------------------------------------------------------
The machines also allow commuters to buy many tickets at once and offer access to the Airport Link rail service.
