Subject: When I was born

I saw this topic on the Mantel and I thought it was neat. I'll start it here because I don't post there anymore. I've also posted this on one other board for those that don't post there.

The day I was born was apparently a rather thunderous, mid afternoon, April showery day in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. My mother told me that I let everyone know I'd arrived when I came out screaming and fiesty. I think I was around 7 lbs 15 oz but I can't be sure. It was the 27th of April in 1965. I was born deaf and regained some hearing at the age of two. I occasionally use hearing aides now but they are more of a pain. I was the third child and sibling to an older brother (Ben-now 41) and sister (Rachel-now 39). My birth name was Linda Michelle Turaza de Bodt Rosenland but, when I was 11, my step father legally changed my and my siblings' names. Mine changed to Rebecca Lynne.

I found out two summers ago that my mother left me in the hospital for my Aunt Judy and Uncle Roland to take home. I'd always been especially close to them and never understood why. I guess bonding does do something. They raised me for 10 months until my mother came back to abruptly collect me because she and my dad had, once again, got back together. That certainly explained a few things for me, knowing what had really happened.

I had 3 nicknames growing up. Spider for my long fingers which were longer than my sister's, who was two when I was born, and they still are (she has these dainty little fingers and my fingers are now 3 inches, pinky, or excess-piano/violinist hands). Angel because I am just so darn nice (no wise cracks..LOL) but more likely because my hair was white until I was three and went white each summer. Sunshine because I always woke up with a smile especially when it was sunny out (I can't say that nick has stood the test of time..I like sleeping in these days).

How about you?

I honestly don't know anything about my birth. I never thought to ask my mother about it, and both my parents are dead now so I guess I'll never know.

I was a little bitty thing, not premature, just small, and it wasn't until I hit adolescence that I finally caught up with everyone else in the height department. My mother told me that I wore toddler size clothes well after I started school. I managed to hit 5'2", which is pretty damn impressive considering that the men on my father's side never got over 5'6" tall, and my grandmother was a whopping 4'10" tall.

I was an only child and raised pretty much around adults, there weren't many kids living in my neighborhood, so I matured quickly. That's all I know about my early years.

to be said about not knowing certain things about your birth though, for me, I would have had questions. Curiosity more than anything. Having only two pictures in our family albums of me, in the early days, one as a newborn, the next as probably a 1 year old, I wondered if I had been adopted. I only had to look at my older brother to know that it wasn't a possibility since we are near clones of each other, even the down to the blonde wavy hair. The difference is that he is like 6'3" and I'm 5'6" (though Hope will tell you I'm 5'5" because she measured me about two years ago-brat, ruined my self image..LOL..I'm shrinking!!!).

You were tiny!!!! I was always tall for my age then I stopped growing and everyone grew up around me. My nick in grade 2 was big feet..LOL...because my height and my feet were so big for someone that age. Thankfully I grew into my feet and they are now average.

I do have unusual circumstances surrounding my birth.

My parents lived maybe 30 miles away from my grandparents (her parents), but for whatever reason they would drive to my grandparent's house in Quincy every weekend. My mother actually went into labor in Quincy early Sunday morning (5/20/73). She tried to keep quiet about it until my father had no choice but to drive her to the hospital in Quincy for the delivery. (He had a cousin who was a doctor 40 minutes away in Rushville -- I think it was part family pride and part him wanting to save a buck or two.)

But he found out just in time for him, and loaded her up with my grandma into the back of her 68(?) LeMans. Grandma has always said she was sure Mom was going to give birth in the back seat! They made it in time, though, and I was born in Rushville with my father's cousin at the delivery.

I was a bit over 7 pounds, my mom was in labor maybe 5 hours, and she was pissed off that the only thing to watch on TV at the hospital were the Watergate proceedings!

Coincidentally, my ex was born in the same hospital 10 months before.

I tried posting to this but it didn't work. I'll try again.

So, do you think your dad's cousin never charged for the delivery? I don't think I could have a family member that closely involved with my most intimate parts..LOL It would be strange passing the mashed potatoes on holiday occasions after such an intimate ordeal. Hope helped deliver Connor but I was so drugged out that I could have cared less what she saw at that point. She helped shower me at the hospital too..LOL

Coincidence that your ex was born at the same exact hospital?

Just kidding... lookin' atcha birthin' yer baby didn't do much to my eyes. Well, they did open REALLY wide when I mistakenly thought his wee pee pee was the umbilical cord! Here I was thinkin' what a lucky woman he would have as a wife... LOL

Sure I got to see more than I should have but who am I to argue with a Doctor eh? BTW... next time... shave that leg eh? I got freeking road rash! ;-)

That was a night I'll not soon forget. Although I could easily skip the puking up of the jello part. (I'm a sympathetic puker... *sigh*)

And no... Hell did not freeze over! LOL

I was born in March, 1963 in Uranium City. Basically... very north west tip of Saskatchewan. I think we were about 10 miles from Lake Athabaska... and not far from the North West Territories border. You flew in there during the summer... when it snowed, you were stuck until the spring thaw.

I don't remember specifics but I believe I was born in the morning... early. I was over 8 pounds and the second biggest to be born in my family. I have 3 older brothers and my Mom swore she new I was going to be a girl from the date of conception.

She never had morning sickness with any of my brothers but with me... she puked every day... even on the table right before she delivered me. She said she knew I was a girl because her pregnancy was so miserable. I just told her I wanted to be different. I hated to copy my brothers... LOL

When they brought me home from the hospital my brothers were waiting. Mom had to change my diaper and my oldest brother commented (as only a 4.5 year old can do) "Mommy, she's broken! Her pee pee fell off!!!" :-)

I've heard you and your Mom tell that story so many times but I still can't help laughing!!! "She's missing parts mom!!!" It's like Connor asking "Mommy, where's your penis?" Typical man..LOL. I'm waiting to tell his first girlfriend THAT story..LOL

>>She never had morning sickness with any of my brothers but with me... she puked every day

You see, with Connor, I also knew what I was having early on. I thought I was having a boy with Ash because the pregnancy was so different and, even when she was born, Dr. Guy said "It's a boy, no, oh, it's a girl." I was stumped after that. I had three girls before and only one pregnancy with awful nausea that I had black eyes from puking. The pregnancy with Connor was so different because I couldn't hide it two months in. I had been able to hid it for 5 months in the previous ones. Remember Dr. Guy had my ultrasound for twins because my uterus was huge so early?? I never had that before. I was small before. I had no real nausea with him but I ate like I never ate before. It's like I was making up for lost time or something. Greek today, Italian tomorrow, Mexican the next day, French the day after that. I ate and ate and ate and I swore I was giving birth to a 14 year old boy for my six meal a day appetite. I should have had stocks in Taco Time for all of the soft tacos I ate..LOL Then I had my ultrasound when we thought we were losing him at 16 weeks and I saw everything he owned in 3X the size and I thought "oh my god, that poor girl...LOL" Remember that? His little picture of his profile that I put in a frame by my hospital bed? So I could look at him and talk to a little person? He's so handsome and such a little gentlemans (gentlemans for us) :-)

And what do you mean shave my legs!!?? I'm blonde! Like the hairs on my legs are razor sharp!!?? Come on, tell everyone how much you enjoyed showering me and delivering my boy..LOL

Thank you for being there...god knows his father was who knows where..was he in the room? I know Ben was sick but where was Ken?
