I used to really enjoy martial arts movies. Back in the days of Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. I got back into them after discovering Jet Li. Has anyone else seen his movies? I actually liked the fight scene in Exit Wounds with Steven Seagal. The abilities of these athletes is amazing.

I hadn't realized, until recently, that other women liked these kinds of movies so I thought I'd ask everyone if they like them too and what your favourites are.

Same here, almost identical circumstances. I saw all the old Bruce Lee movies, and the Chuck Norris ones, including the one that had both Lee AND Norris in it. Then they just kind of stopped making them, until the VanDamme/Seagal era. I personally don't care for Seagal, because he's a jerk, but I did enjoy The Glimmerman, mainly because he didn't take himself quite so damn seriously. I like the very early VanDamme movies that concentrate solely on the martial arts, like Bloodsport and Kickboxer, because VanDamme is beautiful to watch in those. BTW, I forgot to mention earlier that Bloodsport is the true story of Frank Dux, a kickboxing champion. Then Seagal got all environmental correct and his movies were all about saving the trees (nothing wrong with saving trees, but it doesn't really go with ass kicking), and VanDamme decided he needed something called "plot" in his movies, which served to point out that if you have "plot" you should be able to "act".

Then I discovered imported Hong Kong action flicks. I knew about Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat (who's actually more action than martial arts) a couple of years before they ever became known here. John Woo (famous here for Face Off, Mission Impossible 2, and Windtalkers) has been a major director in Hong Kong for decades. His action films kick some serious butt! Jet Li did mainly martial arts films, including the fantastic Once Upon A Time in China series, set in the 1800s. The main difference between Hong Kong flicks and US flicks is that the martial arts movies generally use a lot of wirework, for those fantastically improbably leaps and jumps. To give them credit, 90 percent of the stories are based on legends, or legendary figures that are larger than life, much like Paul Bunyan or Hercules in our culture.

The American films that Li has done are a lot less martial arts oriented than his Hong Kong movies (to appeal to the US action crowd), with more or less "normal" moves. The Hong Kong movies are more along the lines of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, or The Matrix. A number of Li's HK films are being imported and released in the US with dubbing instead of subtitles, so I imagine that he'll become even more well known as more people stumble across them.

Another interesting thing about Hong Kong films is that despite making a huge number of films per year, there's a fairly small pool of actors, so you see the same faces in movie after movie. Cross-overs are a lot more common there, than here, with a good percentage of the new young actors and actresses having huge success as singers as well as actors.

And so ends today's lesson on Hong Kong cinema. LOL

I'm definitely going to have to rent that movie. Do you remember the name of the movie that Lee and Norris were in together? I'd love to see that too.

You're right about Seagal going environmental. On Deadly Ground was exactly that. Justice For All was okay but somewhat predictable.

That's really interesting stuff about the Hong Kong movie business. I agree that the wire work does throw some unbelievability into the movies but I loved Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon nonetheless. It also makes sense what you've said about the small pool of actors there. That certainly explains why the pretty heroine seems like the same actress in all of the movies and the young kid that accompanies Li in many movies is also the same.

I told John that all I want for Christmas is the Jet Li series. I hope I'm a good enough girl that it will be under the tree. Then I can spend the next week watching those shows.

I've got to dash to my pretend job but I'll catch up you guys later.

If you're wanting all his movies, John better whip out the Platinum card, because Li has 40 movies out (including a couple of documentary types), and I doubt you can fit all of them into one week. I've seen about 20 of them so far.

Heh, we don't do platinum here. One visa with a $1,000 limit is enough..lol. But I will have to rethink what series I want if there are 40 of the flipping movies out there. There was this China Connection series or something like that? It seemed like there were about four or five movies the series.

I loved him in Lethal Weapon 4 and some of his other latest movies. He is awesome! Jackie Chan is a hoot too! I used to love Van Damme when he first came out Blood Sport and all the others, but he has since gotten old news for me. I used to really love Chuck Norris films, but his TV Series Texas Rangers was to tame for me. His film days were alot better. How about the all the Karate Kid movies??? Not too bad as far as they go.

I forgot about those two. Ralph Maccio? I liked that series since it seemed to be the only movies out related to martial arts at the same that appealed to my age group.

I've always enjoyed a good put together martial arts movie. Van Damme is getting too full of himself lately, not alot of good stuff anymore. I did like some of his early stuff. The Frank Dux story was a good one.

Chow Yun Fat is awesome. I really like his portrayal in Anna and the King (I think that was the name of it... with Jodi Foster). Very different from his martial arts/man type flicks. I really liked him in the one with Myra Sorvino... can't remember the name.

Chuch Norris... getting old but again, his old stuff was great. Jet Li now seems to be the one to watch... him and Jackie Chan. I like Jackie but only his newer stuff. I didn't like the one's where he didn't speak english.

Yep, I'm a fan. Depending on my mood I will watch the martial arts flicks. The last movie I watched was G.I Jane. I was sick and not feeling like watching anything mushy. LOL GREAT FLICK!!! Hooooo Yah! ;-)

You're thinking of the Replacement Killers, which I mentioned in my other post here, which you obviously didn't read. *sob*. :)

I just didn't realize that was the name... LOL I really enjoyed that movie, but I think Chow Yun Fat is *drool* too cute!

Speaking of cuties. Viggo Mortenson... he's another hottie. I really liked him in G.I. Jane but when I saw him in Lord of the Rings I just about fainted. He looks so good with a sword and long hair. He can rescue me anytime! ;-)

Yes, Viggo is a babe! So is Orlando Bloom (Legolas). Something about those medievel looking guys with long hair and weapons that's just drool inducing.

He's a hottie for sure! That long blonde hair and those eyes... *sigh* I think I'm watching LOTR again tonight... LOL

I quite liked Sean Bean in LOTR too. He's usually the bad guy and he did kind of go that way but was redeamed at the end.

BTW... when they do the second in the series (I haven't read any of the books) will Viggo and Orlando be in the second one or are they done for the series?

Except for Boromir (Sean Bean) the entire cast is in the two remaining installments, including Gandalf. After reading the first book, I really expected people to start getting killed off. It was a nice surprise when they didn't.

But I thought he died? *sigh* I suppose now I have to go out and buy the damn books! *mutter* LOL

I am glad the others are in the next in the series though. They were so nice to look at, made the 3 hours THAT much more enjoyable... LOL

Viggo Mortensen was Aragorn/Strider the mercenary-type dude who helped them at the inn towards the beginning. Boromir was the only other human in the party, the one who tried to take the ring. Legolas was that hunky little elf guy with the long blond hair and pointy ears. :)

Anna and the King, but I didn't care for the Replacement Killers. It was okay, but I'm a mush for romance films! Anna and The King was filmed in such a beautiful setting, sort of like those big epic films. Love them too! I was just really glad they didn't sing, like the original. LOL

Chow Yun Fat has made approximately 80 movies, beginning in 1974. It looks like a lot of them are romances instead of action movies. I've only gotten to see 15 of them (all action), and I keep my eyes open for the others. Most people don't realize just how long he's actually been making movies!

Chan has been in a total of 115 movies and/or tv series. In HongKong, he's known for his straight martial arts movies, the US has only been exposed to the comedic ones. A good import that's usually available over here is Operation Condor, which combines martial arts, action, and an Indiana Jones style story line. In recent years, Chan has put on a bit of weight and has a "softer" more round faced look than he used to, at one point, he was very similar in build to Jet Li, with a more sharply angled face that went well with the straight action movies.

The US audiences who have "discovered' Chan usually have no clue about the huge amount of work he's done in China, and think of him as a martial arts comedian, which is a recent development for him.
