In reply to: Glenn 's message, "So all we have here" on 15:35:14 06/18/02 Tue

What do you want to talk about? I'm certainly willing to discuss things besides the Middle East. I guess I could ask some questions to you to get the ball rolling.

Have you seen "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"? I thought this one was really funny.

Will you miss Jesse Ventura?

Have you started watching America's best sport, baseball again? :-)

Any advice on how to pay for extensive dental work, when you don't have dental insurance, without going into debt for forty years? sigh.

What other newer flicks do you recommend? It's always enjoyable to talk to you about movies. :-)

I assume this place isn't "happening" because of the existence of the Mantel and that most DP people are either over there or on Jabberwocky, but come on over and start somwe new topics and those of us who are here would be happy to chime in.

I'm looking forward to seeing "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", I'll have to see if it's playing around here this weekend. I really don't like going to the theatre much, and prefer to rent so I usually don't get to see movies until they make it to rental.

About the dental work.....

Find a university/hospital in your area that has a dental school. You can receive low cost dental care (usually on a sliding scale) if you agree to let a dental student work on you. They are highly supervised, so it's not as scary as it sounds. You'd be doing your bit for the future of dentistry, too. *G*

It's a very funny movie. May I ask why you like renting better? It does save a lot of money, but I have a feeling that's not your reason. The local library often has a good collection of videos which cost nothing to take out.
Have you ever seen "Champagne for Ceasar" with Vincent Price. It's a very funny movie that most people seem never to have heard of and I often like to recommend people rent it.

Thanks for the tips about the dental work. I'll look into what's available here. Georgetown used to have something like this, but I'm pretty sure they've discontinued their dental school.

Our opportunities to watch movies occur at really strange times of the day or night. We also aren't very good with extracuricular events that have a well defined starting time, and I won't watch a movie unless I can see it from the beginning.

Our library has a decent collection of vhs and dvd movies so we do check those out. We especially like getting some of the BBC miniseries from the library.

I'll look for "Champagne for Caesar". I always enjoyed Vincent Price movies, even the campy horrors.

Have not seen "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." My mom liked it, though.

Yep, I will miss Jesse Ventura. He was a loose cannon, but told a lot of things like they are.

Have you started watching America's best sport, baseball again? :-)

Best sport? The only one that doesn't ban andro and steroids? A bit. I barely know any players. When they mention someone's last name and you think it's the guy's father that they are talking about, you know you've been away awhile.

Any advice on how to pay for extensive dental work, when you don't have dental insurance, without going into debt for forty years? sigh. - yipe. Take a job just for the coverage.

What other newer flicks do you recommend? It's always enjoyable to talk to you about movies. :-) - Thanks. I have seen nothing lately. This was the first year I've had access to all the NHL and NBA playoff games while being single, and I was like a kid in a candy store. And I really like both teams that won, so my interest never waned. Since I've been in Austin, the only theater films I've seen were Amelie (wonderful) and Fellowship of the Ring (okay).

You like the Lakers? You mean you weren't loyal to the team of your home state? :-)
Haven't caught Amelie yet, but it has come highly recommended before.

I was a Nets fan when Larry Brown was the coach and when Drazen Petrovic played, but didn't care for them at other times - even when Dr. J played for them. And I've never been much of a fan of Jason Kidd.

But I've always loved the Lakers, from Goodrich, West, Wilt, and Baylor, through Magic, Rambis, Wilkes, and McAdoo to Kobe, Shaq, and Horry.

What did you think of the NBA draft, Glenn?

Caron Butler went to Miami. I try to keep up with where all the Uconn stars go. Here in DC, Jeffries of Indiana was a good pick up.

I bought Amelie and the instant I got out of the store I thought to check something I should have checked before. The were no English subtitles. So I took it back.

There weren't any Korean subtitles either? :-)

The options were Korean subtitles on/Korean subtitles off. I have to be careful with non-English films here.

How fluent is your Korean?

Not enough that I could understand movies. Just really basic conversation and requests, but I get very flustered because Koreans are not very polite to people trying to use their language.

Also, it's kind of a given here than foreigners with Korean spouses tend to be *less* advanced because we don't need to use the language as much as those who are here by themselves. :-)

Well, we can agree on some things.

Big Fat Greek Wedding is a great movie. What a refreshing story! Great change after all the junk Holywood serves us on a regular basis.

Yes, very original, very funny too.
How about you, Mark? Any other flicks you've seen this year that you highly recommend?

I can't recommend many movies. I have particular tastes. I like movies that draw their stories from real life and I can somehow relate to on an emotional level. There aren't many shown these days.

That excludes the UFO, Starr Wars, and all the Spider Men in the Univers.

I can't relate to the Titanic, because I feel the story is overated.

I may be one of the few people who thought of "Stalingrad" as a good movie, because I grew up with people who had been there and the movie told the same stories they did. It was though a good movie about a horrible reality... not something enjoyable.
