Subject: New Age

I thought I had a good definition for New Age.

New Age is a spiritual movement that encourages new and diverse forms of expressing spirituality.

I think New Age is a response to the hypocrisy and greed that characterises organized religion, and it also is a response to a spiritual void that organized religion failes to fill.

It is in fact an acceptance of diversity in spirituality and a recognition of individual expression for spiritual search.

Organized fundamentalist religions in the US find New Age a terrible threat.

It basically means that people would acctually THINK and FEEL their own spirituality and not take for granted whatever their "spiritual leader" tells them.

The Laura Schlessingers and Jimmy Swaggarts of the conservative world must hate New Age even more than atheism or agnosticism.

I guess in a sense, New Age and Agnosticism have something in common. The need for more "proof".

While the Agnostic is looking for "proof" in a worldy, scientific way, the New Age person is searching for "proof" in an individual and spiritual and often emotional way.

An example would be when a person finds a strong spiritual experience in an old ritual.

Also, the New Age person is active in seeking a "truth" or an expression of God, while the agnostic is passive (does not care if God exists or not).

Hope this answers Jeff.

Yeah, not too terribly different than how I see the new age movement, about it being a reaction to organized religion. The strange thing is that it *almost* makes me respect organized religion in that the new age movement has an anything-goes attitude. They can't ALL be right, can they? I think what prejudices people against the movement is the frequent lack of critical thinking skills among those in the movement, and the emotionally-based decisions they often make.

(p.s. I don't really think of it as a movement, but you can't make a two word noun into an -ism) :-)

The Agnostic says:

When you show me God, I'll believe.

New Age says:

Where is God? I want to see, smell, touch and taste God.

Organized religion says:

Never mind God! Pass the Visa Master Card and do as I say. If it worked for your dady, why wouldn't it be good enough for you.
