my issue isn't with TEAMMATES protecting gretzky - that IS part of the game and i have no issues with that. my original point (waaaaaay back several posts ago) was with the NHL protecting wayne gretzky because he was created to be the league's poster child to sell the game to an american audience. it was unofficially known that players couldn't touch him because the league wanted him to be this huge offensive guy under the opinion that poster child high scorer would appeal to the american public. and i'm not trying to detract from gretzky's natural ability although it may seem like i am - i'm really not.

the league STILL thinks that high scorers are the only way because they constantly are trying to find ways to hogtie defensemen and good goalies so the "skilled" players can be showcased. well, i'll tell you something, skilled players don't only come in forwards. there are many defensemen and goalies who are highly talented and skilled at their jobs and it ticks me off that these guys are ignored just so a gretzky or a forsberg or "insert SKILLED forward's name here" can have an easier time doing his job. let's take out the red line, let's make the ice surface bigger - well if they want all of that, then they can go play in europe!

d-men and goalies have gotten bigger and better at what they do and they're being penalized because the forwards haven't kept pace. pretty soon we'll have soccer nets out there with the goalie as the only opposition.

about the salary thing: i don't blame gretzky for that. in fact, i fault no player for the salaries today. personally, i have no issues with any worker making as much money as someone is willing to pay them. if your employer offered you a job that paid $4million a year, would you say no? if salaries have gotten out of hand such that teams are in financial trouble, there is no one to blame but the folks charged with running those teams. i don't fault jarome iginla or jose theodore for asking for virtually $5 million raises. i fault calgary and montreal for saying YES. especially calgary - i thought they were so strapped for cash as it was. if you wanted to buy a home worth $2million and your total yearly income was $35,000 - do you honestly think any bank or mortgage company would say "no problem"? you couldn't afford it and if they made the loan, it would be BAD BUSINESS. well, these owners are making bad, financial business decisions and they should have to pay for it.

i'm beginning to ramble so i'll stop. if you're a wayne gretzky fan, i apologize if i came across as being unfair to him. oh well. LET'S GO RED WINGS! :)
