Re: to the Family Needs - a discussion.x -- Gee, 13:30:17 03/24/05 Thu (host81-157-53-32.range81-157.btcentralplus.com/81.157.53.32)
>do you remember the 1st time you let Special Needs
>into your lives?
I was washing the dishes (last year sometime) and listening to a tape of death disco and Sylvia came on and i just stopped gazing out the kitchen window in a distracted manner, ran to the tape player and turned it up LOUD. I then proceeded to dance round the kitchen.
A few months later, at 5.43am (or thereabouts) I couldn't sleep for the life of me. Tired and frustrated, Sylvia played from the mix cd in my player. Suddenly sleeping seemed very unimportant. I roused myself from my bed and bopped round my room singing much too loudly for the time of morning.
That afternoon I began my search for mp3s large and small.
I haven't looked back.
(love and excitment for album-y goodness abounds)

while I'm not part of the 'family', and I've never posted here before, I do remember the first time I heard them.
was walking to school and it was cold cold (northern Alberta winters are brutal!!) and had forgot my touque, so I thought putting my headphones on would at least keep my ears from falling off. I had burned a cd with tracks that the most lovely person had sent me the night before, and hadn't yet listened to them. First on was Winter Gardens, and it just warmed me right up, honestly, the walk didn't seem nearly as cold.
Now it's sort of a tradition for me to listen to them whilst walking to school.

ahh, shameless reminiscent nostalgia... -- Jess, 02:11:13 03/25/05 Fri (81-174-210-120.pth-as3.dial.plus.net/81.174.210.120)
I remember it perfectly. I had just met all the people who are now my closest friends, midsummer last year. I was taking to Alison on tinterweb and we were talking about bands and the like as you do. She mentioned teh Needs and was aghast that I had not heard you yet so she burnt me a cd which I listened to on the pavement around the corner from Infinity in the late evening sun with a larger and a cigarette.
And that was that, as they say!

shall i do it to? i like this... -- brenda, 02:49:36 03/25/05 Fri (host81-157-0-27.range81-157.btcentralplus.com/81.157.0.27)
I downloaded a bunch but hadn't really listened to them (because I'm rubbish at paying attention to music.) One day when Kate was still living with me and we were staying up all night just because we could, I went to bed at six am and got up around noon, only to find that she was still awake and had been listening to Sylvia on a loop. She sat me down and made me listen and that was that.
You are all fantastic. Just wanted to say.

I think someone's meant to start sobbing right around now -- Annie, 04:20:06 03/25/05 Fri (user-6691.l3.c3.dsl.pol.co.uk/81.79.90.35)
It was a Tuesday in October..I can probably tell you the exact date, hold on..yes, the 12th of October (I have a mind like a calender), and I had heard the Needs mentioned around t'interweb for a while. I wasn't interested at first, because I hate that song by Placebo with a fiery passion (ahem).
Anyway, for whatever reason, curiousity got the better of me and I'm ridiculously thankful it did. I hunted down the tracks on the Poptones website and downloaded "Stick Around" and "So Be It". I listened to "Stick Around" first, and by the time I got to "I heard you're going with some guy called Ted...", I was hooked. It was like a natural high - I was addicted and extremely happy about it. I downloaded everything else in a hurry, and ten days later I bought Francesca.

Somewhat late in the day... -- Leonora, 02:47:20 03/29/05 Tue (webgw1.thls.bbc.co.uk/132.185.240.121)
I was a bit slow in welcoming Special Needs in to my life. I'm a bit cautious like that. But what did it in the end was John Kennedy playing Francesca over and over again. In the end I just had to hear it every day on the way to work. But what really clinched it was seeing them live for the first time at Islington Academy. The live thing is where you truly feel the specialness.
