Hello Paul - thanks for your comments - I reply to let you know where I stand on this and hasten to add I am not speaking for the band - this is a personal view.
As a veteran of the 60's Aldermaston Marches, when Stand Down Margaret was released in the early 80's I was proud to be associated with a group of musicians who donated all the proceeds of this hit single to CND.
The song has always had a special resonance with Beat audiences. Regarding the new ending - its Stand Down Georgie as well as Stand Down Tony.
In your support of Blair you say ...(apart from the mistake of backing Bush to war)... MISTAKE? - It led me to resign from a party I have been a member of most of my adult life. The issues are endless and complex - bottom line, I believe the world is a less safe place since the invasion of Iraq and I fear for all of us as the consequences continue to unfold. As you rightly acknowledge, the other lot are worse, so I take no pleasure in my newly disenfranchised state.
I will say however that if 'meaning it' really counts for anything in this life - I really, really mean it when I sing those particular lyrics.
