yes, i do listen to a lot of what could be lazily classified as "emo". (i just hate the word emo, i'm not having a go at you kevin!) however, looking at the bands i cited as great songwriters, i think if we break it down there's not actually a particularly high percentage of emo type stuff. so:

against me: anarcho folk punk, i've heard them described as. songs vary from the tragic (pints of guinness make you strong, 8 full hours of sleep) to the political (the politics of starving, those anarcho punks are mysterious) and they really are one of the best bands around right now. have a listen, you might be pleasantly surprised!

hot water music: i spose you could class them as emo, especially the newer stuff. but the older stuff (try no division) is much more political.

fugazi: you know them right? anyone who calls them emo is wrong. if you don't know them, go listen to, oh, any album. they're on dischord, they're cheap.

strike anywhere: just as political as bad religion or anti flag.

grade: yup, you could call them emo i spose. or screamo, or whatever you want to call it.

converge: it's emo jim, but not as we know it...

and you don't need to be able to sing to be in a band, just get someone else to do it. or get a cheap accoustic guitar and strum away, a la justin sane. or hell, put on some gigs with some bands you like! that's what i do (being completely untalented musically). no one'll turn up, but you'll have fun!
