>Hear, hear Kevin. Hull gigs are still cheaper than the national average and if we are to attract more touring bands and bigger names then we have to be prepared to pay what these gigs cost. And there still seem to be one or two that will whine on about it, it is refreshing to see that it is getting less of a concern for more people(the cost of gigs). I must admit to being a little disappointed that some of the very same people who appear to criticise are some of the ones that are subscribing to the will of clubs like the Welly club and the Room and even Spiders, who's only interest is in the colour of money and no real interest in service or Cultural benefit to the City. I have personally striven to try and get the city "on the touring map" and get bands into different venues to get some variety in places to go, at great cost to myself on many occasions(both finacially and physically/mentally) and without my efforts in recent years there would be no PUNK "scene" as we know it other than that, that existed in people's bedrooms with their cd's etc. I have always been a champion of local bands of all genres, but particularly punk as that is what i am.
Now before the knives come come out, i have never denied the necessity to make some money in order to move forward(as gigs do cost to set up, especially if you move away from the cheapness and convenience of the Adelphi, which for all my criticism is still the only genuinely reliable place to "cut your teeth" either as a promoter or DJ or performer for which it's contribution to the history of Hull is beyond question, and goes completely ignored by the city fathers and image makers). Though i do not expect anyone to justify themslves/their admission charges for gigs to me, as they are generally only trying to earn a living(and generally working far harder than many that attend shows, for often smaller rewards)in the same way that students work in bars or fast food outlets(making tons of money for large corporations) or kids do paper rounds etc. Gigs in Hull are favourable priced when compared to club admission prices. To be honest i would rather have gigs in the hands of people that care such as myself, Harry and Darren, Murph and Karla, the pipedream promotions team, than some of the Wankers that are sniffing around with their greedy mitts(there are quite a few right now, though their interest is outside the punk bands for now, though i'm sure with the success of Freak Union and rising popularity of other Hull area punk bands, it can only be a matter of time before they come sniffing round here).
Well i would be interested in hearing any comments on this, but i would hope it could stay a civilised debate rather than descend(ents) into a slanging match(as these things do tend to.
