Subject: OT: Today's Tragedy

I'm sure everyone has heard about the tragedy with the space shuttle today.

I was shocked when I heard the news... I guess that space travel has gotten so common place and they rarely rarely have problems, that you don't think about it happening. It's been 17 years since the last disaster... Such a long time... When so much time passes, you don't think of the dangers very often. I think, too, for young people the dangers are even less real. I was 6 when Challenger blew up, and I have very vivid memories of it... The way my kindergarten schedule was, I was off on the day it happened... My mom, sister, and I watched it take off... But, somehow, over time, space travel came to seem safe again..

It seems to, we lose sight that astronauts are still very much so heros. Back when space travel was first getting started, everyone thought they were so heroic... But, it seems that, today, we don't think about it so much.

I'm sure this is a very difficult time for the families and friends, and they as well as the 7 heros that went home today, are in my thoughts and prayers.

My thoughts are with the family and friends of these 7 heros. We don't often enough think about them like that, as you said Dottie and that's a shame. I think we forget just how intelligent, courageous, and strong these people have to be to become astronauts.

It's sad that it takes a tragedy to remind us of these things, as well as telling us that even space travel isn't completely safe. I hope and pray that nasa learns from this tragedy and makes space travel even safer for the next mission.

I don't remember the challenger well - I was only five but in Kindergarten as well - but I know it was extremely sad and took a toll on the space program. I hope this disturbing tragedy turns into a positive effect for the space program.

My thoughts and prayers go out to them too. Such a tragedy and loss.

I hope their families can get through this difficult time because I know it will be hard for them.

And may the 7 hero's rest in peace.

Yes, it is a great tragedy. So it behooves each of us to think about our individual lives and perspectives. We never know when it's our time to go. The men and women on board the Columbia had visions of greeting their families later on that day, and now that time won't ever come. It's very sad, but very real indeed. :(
