Happy Birthday, J!

The side-benefits of isolation is having a quiet hour for lunch, read my e-mails, surf the net and listen to the radio.

I also appreciate very much that, despite all the chaos and messy management of the government, >99.9% of people are staying in their position. I admire the courage of the nurses whom have to stay in those areas constantly for hours/day, the "minor" staff of the wards whom are not minor at all. Those working in more stormy hospitals, PWH, PMH and UCH should receive the highest respect.

I recall a movie at our secondary school days, the "Waterloo". The French and British soldiers were falling in groups, one would step forward as the one in front of him being shot down. At that time I was wondering could this occur in the present liberal world? Would they just hide away than facing the war if they could have a choice?

Another sad thing is the amount of garbage produced each day. Each day I have thrown away numerous no. of gloves, caps, masks, paper towels, plastics, foam boxes...... For those whom are not staying is SARS region, please double your usual effort in saving up those. I plead for your help to do my portion during this period.

Well, lunch time is over! Chat with you all soon!

It's glad to see that the central leaders at Beijing taking positive steps. It's right to sack the Health Department Chief, although I am not sure whether he is the highest official to organize all those cover-up in the past. I think the Canton officials should also be responsible, too. They all made serious mistakes in under-estimating the negative impact of SARS, not only to the people's health and lives, but also to the whole country's economy and international credit.

To have a disease outbreak by a new virus is not a shameful thing at all, this is only a play of chances in nature. But to cover up......

As I said, in practicing clinical medicine, one mistake could cost a life. In practicing community medicine, one mistake could cost hundreds or thousands of lives and hurt the whole country.

The health care personnel we need to salute really are those whom bravely sound out the truth at that political atmosphere. To allow the lie to perpetuate would be disastrous.
