Subject: The Parachute Regiment (2 Para)

RAF Akrotiri 1960s.( 70 Squadron) We often used the Hastings for "delivery" in those days, and I have very few happy memories! We were jammed together 15 each side with a high wire to clip on your parachute strops that ran from the top of the bulkhead behind the pilot to the floor at the end of the fuselage. Being 6 2" I hated being no 15 as I had to hunch over my weapons container like the hunchback of Notre Dame while the plane dipped and swung like a fairground ride. ( On a long flight sick bags were needed !)On a good day with an experienced Despatcher the Stand up came just a few minutes before exit, but some days it seemed like hours ! Thanks to all who serviced, flew and despatched us , we had absolute faith in your abilities, and your care for our saety.
