17 confirmed dead in Maldives’ worst ferry disaster

Thursday, 18 March 2004
THINADHOO ISLAND, Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, March 18 (HNS) -- At least 17 people have been confirmed dead by Thursday morning in the worst ferry disaster in Maldives which occurred Wednesday evening in this atoll. The death toll could increase as more passengers are still not accounted for, officials said. The number of passengers on the boat has not been confirmed, the President’s Office said on Thursday morning.

According to sources, on Wednesday evening, the boat “Enamaa” from Thinadhoo island was returning home from Gaafu Alifu atoll Villingili island, carrying around 300 Thinadhoo fans who went to Villingili to watch a match of the atoll football tournament. However, after caught in the wake of another passing vessel around 9:00pm, the overcrowded ferry turned over, resulting in many going missing.

Among the dead include 11 women, five children and one man. The children include two 4-year-olds (one girl and one boy), one 5-year-old girl, and two 17-year-old boys.

According to officials on Thursday, so far, only 99 people have been rescued. The rescued had various degrees of injuries and are being treated at Thinadhoo island’s Regional Hospital. Some of those treated have been allowed to go home. For more information click this link
