I cooked a bunch of thighs today and just like you said finished them over direct heat with a sauce. I smoked them with a nice spicy rub and did about ten to fifteen minutes on the grill with a vinegar/honey/lemon juice sauce to finish. The results were worth the pain of double cooking them and the skin was nice and crispy!!
