Hi Gerry:
Lump burns hotter but fast, and briquettes slower but not as fast. IMOP briquettes are easier to control in a long and low cook. The only time I would use lump would be for steaks or something you would cook in a short time.

Except unless you want to baby-sit it and lounge around drinking beer...LOL
