Hi Brad,

Welcome to the board and all the wisdom herein contained. I am fairly new to the firebox-style of smoker myself, but have been smoking for years on an electric water smoker.

I have found the info on this board to be very helpful with my tranformation from electric to charcoal. I prefer to use briquettes myself, as I find them easy to start in a chimney. Also try to find 100% hardwood charcoal with no fillers or lighting chemicals.

I use mostly maple and apple for flavour in my pit, but still use a lot of hickory chunks in my water smoker.

Good luck with the new pit, and remember to keep it low and slow !!!

JMC
