Suzie,
This is similar to me. I have a difficult time answering test questions in which I cannot explain myself, such as true/false or multiple choice. When I am able to write an answer, I do very well on exams. Some tips that I use to help me write out exam answers are: read question through outloud (usually I do this quietly to myself), underline important parts from the question, create a small list of key points to cover in my response. I also try to close my eyes, or try not to look at my test sheet if I am having a difficult time focusing. He also may feel more pressure when taking an exam because he may have a difficult time comprehending a test question when he reads it to himself, and he may become overwhelmed. Multiple choice, matching and true or false questions are a dyslexic person's worst nightmare (atleast in my case).
Also, I was a difficult case to diagnose, as I was also a good reader. Sometimes there are exceptions. I hope that eventually his parents can realize they are not helping him by denying that he may have dsylexia. I hope that these things help. Good luck!
