Hello Everyone,
I am going to do a PhD looking at the roots of Creativity in Dyslexia with regards to Visual-Spatial 3 Dimensional Thinking at the university of Bath starting this October in
conjunction with the Arts Dyslexia Trust. More specifically I shall be focusing on Mental Rotation (the ability of people with Dyslexia to visualize objects and letters from
different angles) and symmetry recognition (the ability to detect whether or not something is a perfect mirror image. I shall be developing a test of dyslexic strengths which could ultimately be used by schools and educational psychologists to index visual-spatial thinking ability in dyslexic children, which would allow education to be targeted at making the most of their visual-spatial strengths. It could also be used by businesses to index the visual-spatial strengths of their employees, and be a measure used to recruit visually able dyslexic employees into roles requiring visual-spatial strengths. I will also be extending this research to look at visualisation ability in autism, which will be indexed by testosterone levels.

I would be very grateful if you would be able to help fund this PhD, or put me in contact with anyone who would be able to help fund it. Here is a breakdown of the total amount of money I will need to fund myself during the 3 1/2 years it typically takes to do a PhD.

Per Week Per Year 3 1/2 Years
Accommodation 110 5720 20020
Food 30 1560 5460
Total: 25480

I am currently doing an MSc in Human Communication and Computing in the Computer Science Department at the University of Bath, which is on Human-Computer Interaction, or improving computer usability. For my Final MSc project I am doing a study on Enhancing Computer Usability for People with Dyslexia, supervised by Dr Mark Brosnan.

For my Third Year Project I did a study on Mental Rotation of the Rubik's Cube in People with Dyslexia. This involved creating complex stimuli from scratch and doing complicated statistics in the form of two 2x2x3 mixed Design Anovas, one for reaction time and one for accuracy.

Please email me and I shall send you my proposal and CV.

Best wishes,
Catherine Black
