I am a dyslexic student (diagnosed since the age of six) and I currently working pursuing my Ph.D. (half way through my dissertation) and I have a VERY difficult time editing my work. Here are some of the strategies that have helped me.
1. Purchase a copy of Dragon Naturally Speaking. I personally have not had much with dictating with the program BUT the program will read what you have written back to you. This has helped me catch numerous errors.
2. Throughout my education, I have made friends with students who are good writers and good editors. They will have been a god send for editting my work.
3. Although I used the writing center during undergraduate years, they clearly specified that they DO NOT proof read your paper. It was a waste of time to try to get them to proof read. When I could not find a friend to proof read the paper, I sometimes would use copy editing services that were available for a fee.
4. Try to assure your son that there are some really good teachers out there. I had several professors who made comments about my sloppy handwriting and poor spelling dispite being aware of my disability. As I was told by a very wise, this is a sign of their ignorance rather than a comment of my intelligence. What doesn't kill you will only make you stronger.
