Greetings All:

Yes I would like to participate in your study. I am GMC(SW/SCW)Peter M Michelson, age 50 as of 24 May 2008. I have been dyslexic all of my life. Born that way.
When I was five 45 yrs ago my parents discovery something wrong, back then questioning the teachers was like talking to a brick they did not get it. Any way to make a very long story shorter thru very hard work, and my parents finding the correct clinisions to test and retest at NYU medical center we finally had a true understanding for what I had. also in 1972 we found a school called the Lorge School. Far better then the publics schools of the day. At THe Lorge School when I was retested there I was found again to have 2nd grade reading and 3rd grade math levels.
So the principle at the time was a Mr. Gold, and the physcologist there at the time was a Ms. Spencer told my parents they would try. I was sitting right there and all look at me and said what do you thing? I said since your classes are 10 or 11 in size vers 40 to 50 lets do it. Then I said try nothing as long as you have the program its 110% will do. At the end of about 4 yrs I graduated at the top of my class reading at about 12th grade and math at college level.
Now comes reality. Back in 1976 there were very few schools that offered programs for Dyslexia. So LIU said they had a program but it was just tutoring. I did about 3.0 to 3.25. All the while working as a plumber/steamfitter apprentice. Then when I graduated from apprenticeship I recieved my journeymens card. Then thru the Union I also went to HVAC school; also recieving my journeymens card. Then in 1988 when the construction industry dried up in the NYC tri state area I desided to go into the USN and become a GunnersMate.
Talk about reality. in 1988 while at MEPS and being retested again with ASVAP the LT pyschologist pulls me into her officer and says Peter do you know you have dyslexia! and I reply with a smile LT all of my life and went to special school for it and also went to LIU and while there had a 3.25 GPA. She was all to concerned I would have problems. I can manage. So she said ok I will keep my eye on you. Little did I know all the while going thru boot camp and A school this LT was tracking my progress. And in 1989 I graduated A-school with 92.5% GPA and at graduation LT was there. congrats and welcome to the fleet.
I am not going to say that the 19.6 months I have been in have ever been easy no way I have worked long and hard to over come on my very own the problems that are always there for us with dyslexia.
I want to be part of this study to prove you can over come and have a great life. Also I would like all the help and referrals I can get to finally finish my degree.
I am in San Diego is there any way we can still do this? If so you can email at vikingstarvikingstar@hotmail.com or peter.michelson@navy.mil or call me @ 619 253 3498. Thanks

V/r
